Enlarging Images: How Big Can We Go?

When it comes to printing images, there are many factors to consider, including resolution, size, and quality. In a previous comparison between my Canon R5 camera and an iPhone 13 Pro, I explored how well these devices can capture real-world images in various conditions and settings. But one aspect of image processing that often gets overlooked is the process of enlarging images to poster size.

The image above was chosen from our original comparison because it showcases the most dynamic, detailed shot with a challenging composition for the iPhone 13 Pro. Enlarging this image to poster size (24” by 36”) reveals some interesting details about how well these devices can handle large prints.

In photography, it's standard practice to enlarge images before printing them. This is because most cameras produce images that are not natively suitable for printing at larger sizes. For example, my Canon R5 camera produces images that can be printed up to 27 by 18 inches at 300 dpi without any issues. However, if I want to print an image at a larger size, such as standard poster size in the U.S., I need to enlarge it first.

In our comparison, we tested the limits of how big we could push these images in print. The results were impressive, with some images passing muster for online consumption but falling short of professional standards. To achieve this level of quality, I had to edit and manipulate the images to ensure they looked their best at larger sizes.

One key takeaway from our comparison is that even a high-end smartphone like the iPhone 13 Pro can produce passable prints, especially when edited properly. However, for professional-level results, a dedicated camera like my Canon R5 still offers superior image quality.
